Axia Smart Active

I do not receive automatic updates from the App anymore. How is this possible?

There are two possible causes that can be solved easily:

  1. In your personal settings, ‘Allow Push notifications ” is switched off.  If you activate this, you will receive automatic updates again.
  2. You are using an old App version. This concerns versions prior to version 1.6. To check this, go in the app to ‘?’.  Scroll in the section  Helpdesk all the way down to the bottom where you find the software version (for example: Axia Smart Active Android app, v 1.5.3). If you have an old version, please remove the old app from your phone and install the current version from the Apple App Store ( IOS ) or Google Play Store (Android).

How does it work?

What is the difference compared with a normal ergonomic Axia office chair?

This office chair has the Smart Active technology installed in the cushion of the chair. The office chair is programmed so that it gives a vibration signal every 30 minutes that you sit continuously on it to remind you that it is time to get up out of your chair. If you are away from the chair for at least 3 minutes, this is considered as a sufficient interruption of the sitting time. Sitting properly when necessary, and moving around where possible, helps you to develop a healthy and active work style.

How does the chair measure whether someone is sitting on it?

The Axia Smart Active makes use of capacitance measurement to detect whether someone is sitting on the chair. The system uses 2 AA batteries that are located on the underside of the seat cushion.

How long do the 2 AA batteries last?

The battery life with normal use is around 3 years.

How does the chair know that I am sitting on it and not someone else?

The person who connects to the chair via the app is seen as the user of the chair. It is not possible to check whether that person is physically sitting on the chair. If no-one has connected to the chair, but someone is sitting on it, the chair will give a vibration signal every 30 minutes. This is the standard factory setting.

Do I have to pay attention to anything else when using a new chair for the first time?

The Axia Smart Active makes use of capacitance measurement to detect whether someone is sitting on the chair. When the chair is used in an environment for the first time, the chair may first have to “get used to” its direct surroundings. In some cases, this may lead to deviating measurements during the first use of the chair, but this will correct itself automatically.

Using without the app

Can I use the chair even without downloading the app?

Yes, that is also possible. The ergonomic office chair can also be used without the personal app. The office chair is programmed so that it gives a vibration signal every 30 minutes that you sit continuously on it to remind you that it is time to get up out of your chair. If you are away from the chair for at least 3 minutes, this is considered as a sufficient interruption of the sitting time.

My chair vibrates even though I have not downloaded the app. How could this happen?

There is a mechanism built into the chair that signals when it is time to get up off the chair. If you decide not to download the Axia Smart Active app, the chair gives a vibration signal every 30 minutes that you sit continuously on it to remind you that it is time to get up out of your chair. If you are away from the chair for at least 3 minutes, this is considered as a sufficient interruption of the sitting time.

Can I deactivate the vibration in my chair?

Your employer has decided to provide you with a chair that helps you to develop a healthy posture. The vibration is one of the means employed here. Although we therefore advise against it, the vibration can be deactivated. Ask your facility manager. If you wish to deactivate the vibration yourself, this can be done via the app. You can then deactivate the vibration of your chair via the settings menu.

Installation

Where can I download the app?

The app is available in the App Store (iOS) and in the Google Play Store (Android). An app is not available for Windows telephones.

Is the app free of charge?

Yes, downloading of the app is free.

Can I use the app also without Axia Smart Active office chair?

Yes, part of the app can also be used without the Axia Smart Active office chair. Tips on developing a healthy posture and sitting instruction videos can also be viewed in the app without using the chair.

What Android version do I need to be able use the app?

Android Version 4.3 (jelly bean) or higher

What iOS version / telephone do I need to be able to use the app?

iOS 8 and higher / iPhone 4S, 5, 5S, 6 and 6 Plus

What Windows version / telephone do I need to be able to use the app?

The app unfortunately does not work on a Windows smartphone.

What Bluetooth version do I need to be able to use the app?

Bluetooth 4.0 or Bluetooth Low Energy. You can download a free app from the Play Store / App Store to test whether your telephone has the right Bluetooth version. For example, the BLE Checker from Donly. If the screen turns blue after installation and the message “BLE supported” appears, your telephone is suitable. If the screen turns red, the app cannot be used on the telephone.

Is the app also suitable for tablets/iPads?

Yes, but because the app was not specifically developed for an Android tablet or iPad, there is a relatively large amount of white space around the screen after installation on an Android tablet. The iOS version of the app will operate on iPads, but displays the app in telephone format so that there is a relatively large amount of black space around the program.

Where is the app installed on my device?

That depends on the device. Check where other apps are installed. That is where you will find this app, too.

How can I uninstall the app?

Simply by dragging the download into the recycle bin.

How can I update the app to a new version?

Go to the App Store/Google Play Store and check whether a new version is available.

Privacy

What data are shared?

No data are shared. The app has been developed to give you an insight into your own posture and to help you learn a healthy, active work style. Your privacy is completely guaranteed. We don’t ask you for personal data anywhere.

Can the employer read out data from the chair?

No, no data are stored in the chair and no data are shared. Your privacy is completely respected.

Are data shared with my employer or third parties?

No, the sitting data that you collect in your app on your telephone are intended only for you. Nothing is shared or registered elsewhere.

Connecting to the chair

How do I connect to my chair?

Check the chair number on the label of the seat. Open the app and select “Find your chair”. Then select in the list of chairs the number corresponding to the number on the label.

Hoe can I check whether I am really connected to the chair on which I'm sitting?

There are 2 ways:

The first way is to go to “Find your chair” from the main screen. If you are connected to the chair, your chair will appear at the top of the list with “Connected” under the chair number and behind the chair number a red button with “Disconnect”.

The second way is to activate the vibration. If you can cause the chair to vibrate via the app, then you are connected to the chair. Go to “Settings” and change the “Vibration intensity” of the chair (e.g. from medium to strong and back again). The chair will then give an audible and tangible signal if you are connected to the chair.

I can't make my chair vibrate using the method described above. How do I resolve this?

Close the app completely and then start it again. Check whether the connection has now been made.

My chair is not in the list of chairs. How do I make a connection?

Refresh the list by swiping downwards in the “Find your chair” menu or close the app completely and then start it again. If neither of these methods help, we would ask you to contact your facility manager to have him check whether the batteries in the chair are empty. This can be done using a voltmeter.

I have accidentally connected to the wrong chair. How do I correct this?

Disconnect the link to the “wrong” chair in the “Find your chair” menu and select the right chair.

I receive a message that someone else is connected to "my" chair. But this is not the case. How could this happen?

It is possible that you are not the only user of the office chair, for example because you work part-time, or because you don’t have a fixed workplace. Check in the settings menu whether you have indicated that you are not the only user of the chair.

If you are the only person that uses the chair, then it is possible that someone else has connected to your chair by accident. In that case, select your chair in the “Find your chair” menu. When the app asks you to enter the code of the chair to take it over, enter the 3-digit number of your chair.

I see a large number of chairs in my list. Where do I find my chair?

Look for the number in the list corresponding to the number on the label of your chair. The chairs nearest to you appear at the top of the list. Listed at the top in black are the vacant chairs, and the chairs already in use are shown in light grey in the list.

Sitting data

How long does it take before the first sitting data become visible?

It takes a maximum of 15 minutes after the first connection to the chair has been made before the first sitting data become visible.

I forgot to connect to my chair. Can I correct my sitting data manually in the app?

Unfortunately, this is not possible.

I have also been sitting elsewhere. Can I add these data to the sitting data in my app?

No, that is not possible, unless you were also sitting on an Axia Smart Active there. You can connect to several chairs during the day, but you can only be connected to 1 chair at a time.

I have been sitting, I'm connected to the chair but my sitting data has not been recorded. How could this happen?

Check whether you have also connected a Bluetooth headset to the telephone. Your telephone can only process 1 Bluetooth signal at a time. The time that you were telephoning via your headset is probably not recorded in the sitting statistics.

Sitting time and star rating

I'm connected to the chair, but my chair doesn't vibrate every 30 minutes. How could this happen?

The app coaches you gradually to develop a healthy sitting pattern and an active work posture. For this, the app takes you through a number of levels up to the highest achievable level of 5-star seater. The maximum time that you can sit continuously on your chair depends on the star level that you have reached. If you are a 1 star seater, then you can sit continuously for a maximum of 60 minutes without the chair vibrating; if you are a 2 star seater, then you can sit continuously for a maximum of 50 minutes, etc. You can find the explanation in the app by clicking on “Star rating” in the main menu or in “Today”. It is best, however, to sit for a maximum of 30 minutes at a time, and then to get off the chair for at least 3 minutes.

How do I reach the next level in the star rating?

You can find the explanation in the app by clicking on “Star rating”. If your score for good posture is above 75% for three consecutive days, you will automatically go up one level.

I don't work every day. Can I still earn a star level?

Yes, the days you don’t sit on the chair do not count.

I scored less than 75% on 1 day, when can I go up one level?

When you have scored above 75% for three consecutive days again.

Other questions

Which upholstery options are available for an Axia?

We have a standard upholstery collection. But there are many other options available.

Which height can it be adjusted to?

The standard chair can be adjusted from 40 to 54 cm. By fitting other gas struts, the chair can be adjusted even higher or lower.

What material are the cushions made of?

The cushions are made of ‘moulded foam’.

Can you adjust the seat of an Axia?

Yes, the depth can be adjusted. The controls are to the side of the seat.

Can you fix the Axia in a certain position?

Yes, the mechanism can be fixed in every position.

Does the Axia have a backrest that moves with the user?

If the chair is in the dynamic setting, you will have support in every position.

How do I set up my Axia office chair?

In most cases they are delivered ready to use, but sometimes they are packed as knock-down kits. In such cases, all you have to do is insert the mechanism in the base unit.

How long can I sit on an Axia without a break?

It’s basically possible to sit for long periods, but we advise you to add in an ‘exercise moment’ every 30 minutes.

My eyes are always a problem at the end of a working day. What can I do about this?

There are various possible causes. Perhaps your screen is too far away or the resolution too high. Dry air is also a potential cause. For safety’s sake, contact an optician or eye specialist.

The castors are damaging my floor. What can I do to stop this?

This usually mean you have the wrong castors fitted to your chair. We will come and give you the right advice.

My Axia office chair creaks. Can that be fixed?

We can send an engineer to help you.

My seat is worn. Can I buy a new one?

Yes, with the modular click system, the cushions are easily replaced.

What happens if a chair breaks within the warranty period? And what happens if it's outside the warranty period?

Within warranty, we will come and fix the chair within five working days. Outside that period, you can decide what to do based on a quotation for repair.

What should I do if the chair breaks? Who should I call?

Call our Customer Service department. We will then come and repair your chair within five working days.

Can the cushions be replaced if they are really badly soiled or damaged?

Yes, with the modular click system, the cushions are easily replaced.

How do I clean an Axia – especially the seat cushion?

Wipe the seat regularly with a damp cloth. To remove really bad stains, we can send you cleaning instructions.

Can users carry out their own minor repairs?

You can fix loose armrests or cushions that have unclicked from their fastenings. I case of doubt, we recommend contacting Customer Service.

Are users required to carry out any maintenance?

Yes, keeping the upholstery clean helps to ensure a longer service life. Wipe the cushions regularly with a damp cloth. To remove stubborn stains, we can send you cleaning instructions.

Yes, two thirds of the chair is recycled material. These materials are clean and do not emit hazardous substances. After use, we completely recycle the chair.

It is either refurbished and sold as a Second Life chair, or is fully recycled.

At the moment, Axia® Smart Chair software is only compatible with computers using Windows.

Have any studies been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of an Axia® Smart Chair?

Yes, studies have been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of an Axia® Smart Chair. TNO has researched the impacts of certain postures. The Delft University of Technology has studied the effects of the Axia® Smart Chair on a large group of users. How long do the Axia Smart Chair batteries last?

Can I also get a smart-system fitted in other chairs than an Axia?

No, only the Axia can be fitted with the Smart Technology.

Is the smart system available separately?

Only as a cushion set. If you are interested in that system, feel free to contact us.

Does the vibration function really help? Do you have proof of this?
